Partner dance

In this dance the basic choreography engages synchronized dancing of two partners, as opposite to solo dance or individually in a non-coordinated way, and as opposite to groups of people dancing simultaneously in a coordinated way.

In some partner dances, usually a man is the leader; the other, usually a woman, is the follower. As a rule, they preserve connection with each other. When the connection is loose, the dance is called handhold. In the latter case the connection obliges important limitations on relative body situations during the dance and hence it is often called dance frame. It is also said that each partner has his own dance frame. Although the handhold connection poses almost no limitation on body positions, it is quite helpful that the partners are conscious of their dance frames, since this is instrumental in leading and following.

In promenade-style partner dancing, the partner dance side-by-side preserving a connection with each other through a promenade handhold, in this dance style there is not leader or follower, the man dances usually to the left of the woman.

“Slow dance”, is the most popular style of couple dancing among youth today. In the "hug-and-sway" type of slow dancing, the female puts her arm on the man's shoulders and the man generally puts his arms around the female's waist.
