Polka

Polka originated in the middle of the 19th century in Bohemia, and is still a common kind of Czech and Slovakian folk music. The name comes from the Czech word Polka, that significance “Polish woman”, also in Polish, the feminine form of polak. In 1835, the dance was first established into the ballrooms of Prague. The name of the dance (pulka) is Czech for "half-step", relating to the quick shift from one foot to the other. Due to its name the dance is often incorrectly attributed to Poland.

In 1840, at the Odéon Theatre in Paris, Raab, a dancing teach of Prague, danced the Polka and it was an incredible success.

Polka is a fast, lively dance, and also genre of dance music. It is popular in Europe and in the Americas. It is defined as a vivacious couple dance of Bohemian derivation in duple time; was a basic pattern of hop-step-close-step; a lively dance tune in 2/4 time.
